Evil Geniuses analyst on Dota 2, Peruvian players and the challenges of esports

Esports is becoming an increasingly important part of the global sports community every year. Among the many teams and players, Evil Geniuses (EG) occupies a special place – an organization that has earned worldwide recognition thanks to its achievements and unusual approaches to team management. At the BetBoom DACHA tournament in Yerevan, the team’s analyst Mateus Cysne, known by the nickname “Cysne”, lifted the veil of secrecy of his work, spoke about Peruvian players and the difficulties in the world of professional Dota 2.

Although Evil Geniuses is considered an American organization, its current roster is almost entirely made up of Peruvian players. This decision is not a coincidence, but the result of a deep analysis of the game’s popularity in the region. According to Cisne, Peru is one of the countries where Dota 2 has a cult status. “In Peru, almost every second person knows what Dota is. In local internet cafes, you can still see dozens of players who spend several hours in a row playing the game,” the analyst shares. Such mass passion breeds talents that sooner or later reach the international level. Evil Geniuses decided to take advantage of this potential, becoming one of the few Western organizations to bet on South American players. Mateus believes that this approach not only strengthens EG’s position, but also contributes to the development of eSports in South America as a whole.

Seven years in esports: the personal path of an analyst

Mateus Cisne himself has extensive experience in the esports industry, having worked in it for seven years. However, he admits that he never aspired to be a professional player. “I always felt that I could be more useful outside the gaming arena. My passion is analysis, strategy building, working with data,” says the analyst. His work covers many aspects, from analyzing opponents’ games to emotionally supporting the team. According to Cisne, one of the key tasks of an analyst is the ability to predict opponents’ moves and develop strategies that will help his team dominate the map. “Dota 2 is a game not only about mechanics, but also about tactics. One wrong decision can cost you victory, and my job is to minimize such risks,” he explains.

Despite his high professionalism, Mateus admits that his job is far from cloudless. He named chronic lateness of players as one of the biggest difficulties. “If we have a meeting or an event scheduled, I always add half an hour to the actual meeting time. This is the only way to avoid disruption of plans,” he shares with a smile. In addition, working in an eSports organization requires constant adaptation to changes. Regular patches in Dota 2, roster changes, new opponents – all this requires flexibility and quick reaction from the analyst. “Esports is a living organism. If you are not ready to change quickly, you are doomed,” says Mateus.
