SumaiL vs Evil Geniuses: a high-profile lawsuit between an eSports legend and his former club

Said Sumail Hassan, better known by his game nickname SumaiL, one of the most famous eSports players in the world, has once again found himself in the spotlight, but this time not because of his gaming achievements. The player, who currently plays for Nigma Galaxy, has filed a lawsuit against his former organization, the famous eSports club Evil Geniuses. This legal dispute has been going on for several years and dates back to 2016.

In 2016, SumaiL was at the peak of his career. After the triumph at The International 2015, where Evil Geniuses won the championship title, the player became one of the main stars of the club. In order to keep the talented eSports player on the team, EG management decided to give him a generous gift – 400,000 shares of the company. A gesture seemingly dictated by trust and a desire to build a long-term partnership. However, in 2019, after the club changed owners, everything changed. The new owners, the investment company Peak6 Strategic Capital, converted all of SumaiL’s shares. This was done without explanation or notification, which left the player in the dark about the fate of his share in the club.

A New Contract – the Beginning of the End and Player Claims

In May 2019, Hasan signed a new one-year contract, which included a monthly payment of $20,000 and additional bonuses. However, the team’s results in tournaments began to decline, and the relationship between the player and the organization worsened. At The International 2019, Evil Geniuses took 5-6 place, which clearly did not correspond to the club’s ambitions. After that, according to SumaiL’s lawyers, attempts to pressure the player began. First, Hasan’s contract was changed: his salary was cut to $2,000 per month, part of his obligations were removed from him, and he was forced to sign an agreement on the absence of claims against the club. Then the player was offered to finally terminate the contract. According to SumaiL, these changes were imposed under duress and are illegal.

According to the lawyers, SumaiL found himself in a clearly disadvantageous situation. He was forced to accept “enslaving conditions” that infringed on his rights, and the fate of his shares in the club remains uncertain. The defense also claims that some provisions of the contracts have already been declared illegal.

Evil Geniuses categorically denies the accusations. The club claims that all actions against Hasan were transparent and legal, and his claims are unfounded. However, the details of the trial remain closed, and the real reason for the conflict has not yet been revealed. The trial between SumaiL and Evil Geniuses promises to be long and complicated. This situation has become a significant example of how financial and legal aspects can become a stumbling block even in such romanticized areas as eSports. Hasan, known for his tenacity and integrity, is not going to back down. His case could become an important precedent for the entire industry, showing that the rights of players deserve protection no less than their gaming achievements.
